About Friends of Mitchell Creek Catchment Landcare Group Inc
Mitchell Creek Catchment lies within the boundaries of the Palmerston municipality in the Northern Territory of Australia.
Within the catchment which runs 20kms from its source to the Elizabeth River in Darwin Harbour, there are many exquisite natural sites to protect, many off road bike and walking tracks to explore and many wonderful creek bends to contemplate. It is a great refuge from the bustle of suburban life - a place of inspiration for thoughts, paintings, songs and poems.
Starting only a few hundred metres from the CBD, the Gunn Valley Escarpment track is popular with walkers, joggers, cyclists and nature enthusiasts.
Our Landcare Group aims are to protect the Catchment through advocating for conservation of sensitive areas and also for adequate open space areas to be set aside as picnic areas and allow low-key access.
This allows residents and visitors to experience a wide range of activities such as nature study, bird-watching, jogging, bike riding, wet season swimming, picnicking and quiet contemplation.
We invite you to join in with our groups for working bees;to volunteer at our market stall; attend or assist with guided walks;assist with seed collection and weed propagation; help with promotion through social media...and so on!!
We engage with local schools, off road sporting bodies, local developers and Crown Land Office to provide input to make new subdivision design and construction more in balance with the natural environment.
We will have a Green Army work force operating in the northern 2 sections of the Gunn Valley Escarpment Walk between Maluka St and Buscall Ave from April. We are working with Conservation Volunteers Australia (NT) and the Crown Land Office to achieve this activity.
We are also focused on a few small projects for the Monsoon Gully (Johnston Ridge) - editing 2 short films; organising interpretive signage and establishing the Monsoon Vine Forest credentials of the area which will led to it being listed as "sensitive" vegetation which we will pursue to enhance its protected status.
Our other major site is at the Johnston Wetland Conservation Area. There a few photos of this area on this directory listing.
Please check the blog/website for more information or email email@example.com.
Other small active projects are under development throughout Zuccoli. There will be an update of these in the near future.
